A New Method to Calculate Cotton Fiber Length Uniformity Using the HVI Fibrogram

Knowledge of cotton fiber length uniformity is important for the industry. The accurate and reliable measurement would allow breeders to release new varieties with improved variation. This knowledge also help spinning mills optimize their machine setup, which improve yarn processing performance. Currently, high volume instrument (HVI) most commonly used characterize HVI based on fibrogram principle. characterizes 2 points, 1.8% as upper half mean (UHML) 7.8% span (ML) from fibrogram, reports UHML index (UI). ratio ML calculate UI expressed a percentage. does not represent shorter fibers above two lengths only longest within sample. We propose using complete an alternative. First, area measured curve calculated. Second, theoretical mono-length equal maximum same sample Finally, we Based results obtained set 991 commercial samples, shows promise. applied this 60 commercial-like samples developed partial least square regression (PLSR) prediction models predict quality. demonstrate that predicts quality better than current UI.
